Made Lot Mistakes Last Seven Months
I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the last seven or so months since I started home labbing. So, I figured I’d share them with you guys so you can learn from them. First thing I wish I didn’t do was externally mount these hard drives to the P340. Mostly because of the cable management, not because it’s an HBA card in there connected. It actually makes it easier with that. Uh because it’s kind of a nuisance when I have to ever work on this P340 or the rack or anything in the rack. If I have to mount anything or disconnect anything, I have to take turn this off, take this out, and disconnect the hard drives from the P340.
Mounted Anything Here All Kind Contained
If it was mounted to anything in here and it was all kind of contained within this rack, that’d be a different story. But that is something I wish I just got the hard drives and just mounted them in here, but I just didn’t want to get rid of the DVD drive that is right here. But I just never use it. So, that’s a mistake on my part. Second mistake I made was having too much hardware. That’s a that’s a good thing to have though. But I mean, you can see I have the ProDesk Optiplex Zima board and the ThinkStation. And I just don’t have the services needed for all of this compute. The only real reason why I I got all of these is because I got pretty good deals on them.
Like ThinkStation Bucks ProDesk Optiplex Upgrades
Like this ThinkStation was 20 bucks. That ProDesk was 50120 for the Optiplex. And the upgrades are a whole separate story. But I have I have a bad case of FOMO when it comes to hardware. And I’ve had to pass on a lot of deals just because it just doesn’t make sense to add more hardware. And the third mistake I made was not documenting things properly. I mean, I do have a managed switch that I can go look and see what is connected to what port on here. But obviously, if I had done the documenting from the start, I wouldn’t have to do all that. And that is not only limited to the hardware, but to the services as well.
Into Proxmox Check Out Networking Tab
I have to go into Proxmox, check out the networking tab, and look at everything and document it properly. Uh because even though I am running Engine X on here, I uh if it ever goes down, I need to be able to know where, you know, what IP is connected to what service. Yeah, I have made uh plenty more mistakes, and I but I’ve also learned a lot. So, if you want to know any of those things, uh let me know. I’ll be happy to share.
